BUSH LOSE SHIELD
DANNEVIRKE SUCCESS,
The Bush Rugby representatives, alter holding the Bebbington Shield for six years, lost it on Saturday afternoon to the Dannevirke representative team at Rugby Park, Paliiatua. A good number of supporters travelled from Dannevirke with the side, and there was a record attendance at the ground. '['he teams were: Dannevirke.—L. Hansen. R. Miller, H. Corbishley, V. Herbert. I Dannevirke ■ penetrated first to the Bush territory, but the home side came back, .and Twentyman picked up and dived for the line. He was forced out near the corner flag. Tfalioney next tried to force himself through, but the ball was booted well downfield. The leather was now being
thrown about in free style .and the scoring was opened when Hay took a free kick which he sent between the posts. Hav was saving Hush consistently. Danncrirkc attacked and
tile ball was taken by I’ene, who sent it. on tfi Corbishlov. and then to Herbert, who scored, lie failed to convert his own try. Fallaver was injured, and was replaced by Fergus. A tresh attack was initiated by Bush, when Twentyman picked up and gained ground to kick infield.
After the interval, Twentyman and Ala.honev were prominent in several rushes. Bene cleared from a kick by Lett. Hay failed to gather the hall and the position looked dangerous, but Hunt appeared on the scene and kicked a short one to the line. Damie virke attacked again, and Edwards passed to I). Gollan. who crossed. Hansen missed with the kick. Excitement ran high among the spectators in the remaining few minutes, but Bush were unable to score again. The referee was Air H. Matson (AVaira rapa).
Air A. J. Smith, president of the Bush Union, offered congratulations to the Dannevirko team on their success. The trophy was presented by Air IT. A. Henderson, the manager, who stated that the game was one of the best In' had witnessed outside of an All Black trial.
The curtain-raiser was a third-grade match between Smith and North, the result being a win for North by 11 points to (> K. Dungan scored firsl for north. Bicknell converting. Then for soidh Webb put over a nice penalty. Toahau gained possession and scored for North, while B. Dougherty kicked a penalty goal.
