SENIOR GRADE. OLD ROYS AND KIA. TOA. A STERLING STRUGGLE. Keeping the pressure almost throughnut the game, Old Roys led Kia 1 oa by LI points to nil on the Showgrounds oval at five minutes from the close of the game. Thorne then scored Kia Tea’s lone trv. Old Roys sent a hammering forward rush to the Kia Toa twenty-five, and from a penalty against Kia Toa just outside the twenty-five yards line and well toward the side of the field. billed to menace the Kia Toa line and then Reid, Irvine and Porter joiped in a rush to hand on to Fleming, but the pass from the latter failed. Miller had a good chance well out in the field when Kia Toa kicked from the ruck, but in leaping, for the ball lie unfortunately knocked it on. Reid secured the ball j list on the Kia Toa side of half-way, bowled over Robinson with a magnificent fend and shot away to kick past Carr, at full-back. Early in the second half Kia Toa overran the Old Roys forwards for a period and the spearhead of the open movements was provided bv Parris, Jarvis, Parris again and then Thomas. Carr tried for a field goal, but was bustled, and for a quarter of ail liour Old Roys bad to defend desperately. Old Roys then took the invitiafive and had the better of matters in the general run of play to the end. Carr could not pick up a bull on the ground and Howell picked up about the twenty-five and raced away to score. Buick converted. ST. PATRICK’S AND UNITED DRAW. .The game between St. Patrick’s and f nited resulted in a draw, three points i‘l 1, United scoring their try just before time. Kingsbeer, Coley. Holland. .Barker, Bradley, Arnett, Luxmoore, Bovis. Findlay, DusEdwards, Birchall. Ward. Ward took the first shot at goal, but ilia kick, which was a long-range one, went astray. Twice St. Patrick's were compelled to force down; then J. Heliir made a nice interception and transferred operations to the other end of the field. Hughes missed his tackle early in the movement, which gave Heliir the opportunity. The forwards •swarmed round, and there was some fierce scrummaging. St. Patrick’s continuing to attack. The first score came when Edlin handed to C. Heliir. who broke clean through the opposition, sent on to .T. Heliir. to Richards, who raced round to finish off the movement. Fitzpatrick missed with the kick. The green forwards packed in again, and a knock-on hv Hughes saw a scrum go down. Holland was prominent in a fine penetrating run, but bis pass was intercepted bv Bentley. The United vanguard retaliated and were nearly over. Ward, shortly after, having another unsuccessful kick at goal. Edlin sent a. long low pass to C. Heliir, which was brightly snapped up. Holland saved the .situation with a “speculator.” After the interval. United went down to the St. Patrick’s lino. and Ward bad Ins fourth shot at goal from a penalty. This did not raise the flags. C. Heliir and Bentley initiated a movement which had its culmination in Midlin being pushed out inches from the line. Kingsbeer followed up quickly and caught Fit vnatrick in nos-j session. Tim started a United offensive which lasted for sonic time. Eventually the reward wine when, from a serum, Bradley led les backs, and Kingsbeer sent nn to Coley who. with an open palh before him and plenty of mom to work in. dived across, to bring the score level. The angle was too acute for Ward. St. Patrick's were unsuccessful in regaining the lead, and the final result was:

UNIVERSITY BEAT FEILDING

FORWARDS SUPERIOR

Feilding gave a good account of themselves in tiieir match against University, but lacked the unity of effort which characterised their opponents’ play, due in a degree to the laet that they had to call upon their reserves, to make up the requisite number of players. Varsity team won by 21 points to 12. The teams were: — University. Campbell, .Blakely, Guild, Mitchell, Stewart. Peterson, Bennett, Gray, Green,- McKee, Wallace, McLaren, Terry Carter Thurston. Feilding. Waldin, Sutherland, Mouat, Ahuriri, Williams, Dermer, Thompson, D. Anderson, Anderson, Wilson, Newman, W. Anderson, Sullivan, Scott, Fitzgerald.

In a forward rush the leather passed to Waldin, who fumbled it and down upon him came McLaren and Guild, the latter carrying the ball within .striking distance, when Terry came into the picture and pushed his way through to score in tile corner. McLaren missed with the kick. Fcilding attacked strongly and gained ground but the defenders saved through Campbell, Carter and Blakely, who accounted for Dermer and Sutherland, who were In an attack by University, Peterson, Blakely. Guild, Stewart and Mitchell handled, the last-mentioned going under to Waldin in tiie corner. The yellows drew tiie leather nearer home, Blakely being required to force when tiie ball crossed his goal-line. The territorial advantage was soon lost again to University when Blakely made a dash. Bennett collected from a serum to send the bail back to Blakely, who scored. McLaren converted. With play in University’s half the ball crossed their goal-lino and when Campbell and Thurston failed to dispose of it Dermer rushed in to touch down. Thompson converted. Early in the second spell Feilding gained ground and from a handy position Thompson drop-kicked a goal. A gift try came University's way when Waldin anticipated tiie ball going behind and waited for the bounce, but Peterson coming up fast, interrupted and snapped up tiie ball to score. McLaren converted. Feilding were unable to withstand a determined forward movement by their opponents and the ball was passed cleanly amongst them until Guild handed on to Stewart, who penetrated to score a try which McLaren converted. ’Varsity continued to attack and points again came tiieir way, when Peterson collected from a scrum and crossed in tiie

■far corner. Tiie kick by Stewart missed. Toward the end of tiie match Feilding pushed back the bines and a •series of scrums took place near tiie goal-line the last of which resulted in Sutherland finding an opening to get through. Tiie kick by Dermer failed and tiie whistle sounded a moment later with tiie scores : University 21, Feilding 12. Air C. Eglinton was the referee.
