BITTER CLIMAX
HAPLESS SALVAGE EFFORT. POWERFUL CHAINS SNAP. ILL-FATED SQUALUS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Co py r ig h t.) Received July 15, 8.5 a.in. NEW YORK, July 14. The ill-fated U.S. submarine Squalus, with her grim cargo of 20 dead, momentarily came to the surface to-day with the aid of pontoons, but then plunged down to the bottom again when the powerful chains snapped. It was a heart-breaking climax to seven weeks’ painstaking salvage work. Three lifting cylinders are still attached to the sunken submarine and chains are still under the stern, which is expected to facilitate the next effort at salvage.
