ADOPTED BY BABOON.
BABY IN SOUTH AFRICA. LONDON, June 2;J. A well-authenticated case ol a baboon adopting a negro baby is reported from South Africa. “Presumably the mother baboon lost her own young and adopted the baby through her maternal instinct,” said Professor Haggles Gates, of London University. The boy, now 12. was captured by a pplieo patrol near Grahamstown, and could only utter guttural noises. Later, be was taught English, and is now working on a lann. lie says be walked on all tours, slept in the bush naked, and ate crickets, ostrich eggs, prickly pear, mealies, and wild honey. Often lie was stung by bees when robbing -hives. “An ostrich kicked me in the bead when I was raiding a nest,” be added. Professor Gates sees no reason to disbelieve the boy, although this is the first ease of a baboon adopting a child, I which bears and wolves have done in India.
