MANAAYATU BOARD. Those present nt the monthly mooting. yesterday, of the Manawatii Drainage Hoard were Messrs E. J. Russell, who presided in the unavoidahle absence of the chairman (.Mr \V. Jf. 'l’lie remaining; section of Riddiford’s drain is to he cleaned by the hoard in about a month’s time now that a fence bounding it lias been repaired. Concerning subsidised labour, the Social Security Department advised that a subsidy of oUs per week for married men and 3os for single men was available to June 30 for the employment of 21 men. AVithin a short time, several breaks in the stop bank along the boundary of Mrs Manderson’s property are to be repaired where they liave been broken by cattle. “Very satisfactory progress is still being made with the improvement work on Hurke’s Drain, where the tractor plant is employed.” said the overseer (Mr AT. AVilson) in reporting to the hoard. “At present this plant is operating in Mr Alve’s property. The part of the drain at the joint outlet lias been attended tn. AA'ork on the main drain lias also been completed. Carmody's drain has been completed to approximately To chains above J,ockwootl Road.' AA’ork was 'commenced from Harrison and Lett’s boundary to Burke’s drain. At the present time attention is lining paid to this drain above Lockwood Road. Drain contracts: Most of this work lias been completed with fairly satisfactory results. Approximately 15 drains have .vet to be completed to finish this work.—Adopted. Mr AV. Milverton, of Milson’s Line, waited on the Iward with a proposal that, instead of deepening AYliiskv Creek, a. considerable part of which is on his property, the board should in future only clean it sufficiently to allow a clear passage lor water. He al- | leged that it was owing to the actions of tlie board that the creek was in its present bad condition. Quite a number of head of stock had at various times become bogged in the creek and had to be hauled out. Air Russell: AYe do not deepen drains unless that is necessary; they deepen themselves. Air .Milverton: I merely want the rubbish removed from the bottom. Air Collis asked whether it. was not necessary to keep the creek in a good •state of repair in order to give those settlers on higher land an outlet for their surplus water. He was answered in file affirmative. An inspection is to he made on Monda v next by ATr Russell. Air X. I. Xiolsen, the clerk, in reporting on the financial position, stated that the cash balance at the bank at Ibe beginning of lasf montli was £'95. , 5 1 S.s .Ad. to which lodgments since' made totalling £396 4s .‘ld were to lie added. Accounts for payment came to £1372 os 3d. At the corresponding meeting last- year the overdraft had been £631 15s lid. A total of £I2S 13s 4d was owing to the Emplovment Board. The amount- of rates still oustanding was £lOl 13s sd. as against £203 17s at the June meeting the previous year.
