RACING NEWS

OTAKI NOMINATIONS.

BAY OF PLENTY MEETING.

PADISHAH’S POOR DISPLAY.

A.J.C. MEETING.

GREYMOUTH JOCKEY CLUB.

AWAPUNI JOCKEY'S RECORD. PREVIOUSLY HELD HONOUR. [liy "Spectator.") The I'ahnerston .North horseman, W. J. Rroughtou, who is the loading jockey with 71 vims to Jiiri credit .-o far this season, learned lo ricio under tlio tutelage of LI. W. .New at Awapuni ami as iur back as 1933 34 ho piloted 59 winners, to finish third m the list to L>. J. Ellis and the latu Keith Voitre, who mot an untimely end a lew months ago in a. race in Melbourne. A your later IJroughlon was more succitsiil. He had 85 wins. This titno only L. J. HUB beat him. J Iho 1935-30 period was a bail one for Urouglitou, an accident keeping him out |oi the saddle for several months, with the result that his winning- total was limited to seventeen. Then came the realisation of an ambition. He headed the list, with 63 win*, (,'. (_;. Goulsbro taking second place, lifty-one winners was his next total, and now he is on top again. The season does not close until the end of July, but in that period, with all the meetings featuring a bigger proportion of jumping event*, the chances of JI. Wiggins, Rroughton's nearest rival, overtaking him are not great. 1 hern was a. chance at one time that, Bronghton would be lost to New Zealand. That was when 11. Greene took the roan horse -Araunah across to .Melbourne a feuyears ago. Bronghton went over to ride him, and after he had won his first race, inducements w're hold out to him to settle in the Victorian capital. He toyed with Iho idea for eomo few months, the while h rode a few winners; but ho returned to New Zealand. r.roughlon is a keen all-round sportsman. Ho shoots well, plays orickot, does some fishing, and has had a shot at golf and table tennis. String of Seconds. I'onr seconds in 36 many starts in suc-resi-ivc opens sprint events" at the I'oxton, Wanganui and Hawko's Day meetings in now the record of Solaria. ! Riders Go To Sydney. I Th,. Auckland horsemen It. W. Mc.'lavish, G. Cameron, R. K. Home and A. G. Murray have left to spend a few weeks' 'holiday in Sydney. j Plans For All Irish. I Present plans regarding the Winter , Steeplechase winner, All Irish, at Ellerslie, are that he will contest the W. U. Park j Steeplechase at the Waipa Racing Club's winter meeting, after which he will go on to Trentham and Kiccarton. Earnings of Jockeys. The winning ride of A. E. Eilis on Survoy at Ellerslie earned him £lO3 10s. A Jenkins, as the most successful jockey, drew the biggest cheque. On the fust day his earnings were £146 16s. on Uie second £64 16s. and live losing rides on the final clay added £24 16s—grand total, £236 Bs. Golden Flame Well. Sister to that great miler Golden Wings the Backhaul mare Golden Flame is at present in splendid order. Since being trained ' at Hastings she has secured two wins, and a middle distance race appears to be well within her compass. Valimeen For Tauranga. Valimeen has not been overtaxed since winning at Te Rapa, and the Vuuls filly was. not paraded at Ellerslie. There is, ; however, little amiss with this sprinter, ', who?c presence in the sprint event at Tan- ( ranga. will add much interest to the decision of that event. It is understood that she will be taken to this fixture. Gimcrack Stakes Entrant. I _ Padishah lias been accorded a nomination for the Australian Hurdles, of £ISOO. ;2J miles, and the Australian Steeples of (£ISOO. miles. run at Canlheld on August 5 and 12 respectively. This meeting clashes with the C.J.C. Grand National meeting in the Dominion. Mi- J. llennah has also entered his Bulandshar — Fondle filly llugnie for the A.J.(J. Gimcrack Stakes. Wykemist Double Winner. Wykemist, winner of the Hawko's Bay Steeplechase when ridden by A. Jenkins at Hastings on Saturday, won the l'ark Steeplechase at Napier earlier the same week alter having made all the running in the Napier Steeplechase, in which lie ran third. He was a good steeplechaser a couple of winters back and was winning the Hawko's Bay Steeplechase then when ihe caught his rider napping and ran oil' at the penultimate obstacle. Jack Tar's Consistency. I Jack Tar's connections have been receiving some very remunerative prices lor his placed efforts at recent meetings. He rneed very consistently for places at Avondale, l'ukekohe and Ellereiio (twice). In all probability Jack Tar will ho taken to the Tauranga meeting this week, and with only 61b above the minimum in the chief event he will mest likely be one of the prime fancies on (his occasion. Curie Comes Back. Having his first race since last December the Arausio —Hymarty gelding Curie, put in a bold dab at the finish of the Winter Oats at Napier l'ark last week and he might have filled second berth in a stride or two further. The veteran looked bright and well and he showed no signs of sore-

ness on returning to the birdcage. Curie was sufficiently improved by this outing to win the Whakatu Hurdles at Hastings on Saturday. In his last starts before the Napier meeting he won at Wanganut with 10.5 and 11.3. Improvement By Quilp, Qulip, who won a double at the Napier Park meeting, appeal's at last to be fulfilling the promise expected of him. He is well enough bred to win over a middle

distance, being by Colossus from Sanguinaria and thus a brother to that I fill gelding Colcnsian. His darn is a hnlfBinlor to Koyal Blood and to Hunting Call, and is by Merry Moment from Sanguinary, by Sylvia Park. From this family came i Slippery, Koyal Damon, Koyal Routine, ;' Jov Hide, Silk Sox, Huntingdon, Polar; and Collision. I.

AN INJURED NERVE. HASTINGS, June 12. Many conjectures were made on Sftturlay in Hastings concerning the disappointng and iiiystilying display by the favourte Padishah in" the Hawke's Bay Stecplc■liu?e. He was never closer than a furlong o the leaders and at the finiish was jumpng the last fence when 'H'ykemist and vikiroki were lighting out the finish a luartcr of a mile away. The inquiry sawhe explanation of all concerned accepted is satisfactory. When the gelding cooled off to walk to lis stables, a distinct tenderness wai-i noiocd. which at the time was put down to i bruised foot, but on Sunday, unable to ocatc the seat of any trouble, his ovwiorrainrr, Mr J. Hennah, summoned n • eterinary surgeon, who after a careful inspection discovered that nt one part of the ace Padishah must have struck a nerve vhich momentarily would catt.-c acute ,iain and be quite sufficient to prevent him from striking out. He was out this morning and, though till tender, the lameness is wearing off and the trouble should soon disappear.
