PIPE BAND CONTEST.
DO AMNION FIXTURE IX JANUARY. The Dominion Pipe Band Contest Committee met in AA'ellington last week. The date of the contest was fixed for January 26 and 27, 1940, at Athletic Park, tho B grade contest to be held on the Friday, and the A grade on the Saturday. Each day’s events will comprise the quickstep and drummajors’ display, with the test selection in the evening. Tt was resolved to engage tho Town Hall and Concert Chamber for the evening events. It was felt that a musical judge from outside the Dominion should be secured, and it was resolved to procure such an official from Australia if possible. In view of the possibility of some Australian pipe bands competing at the contest., it was decided to urge upon the Highland Pipe Bands’ Association of New Zealand the advisability of leaving Ihe test selections to the own choice of each band, and. further, because of the short period of time elapsing before the contest. lo point out tlie impossibility of pipe bands learning set tunes. It was stated that a great number of bands desired to compete, and to give them set times would place an undue handicap on the smaller bands, and perhaps discourage them from attending.
