NIAGARA AT AUCKLAND.

ENGINEERS’ COMPLAINTS -MET. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 13. Having left Sydney 20 hours late because of a refusal by seven engineers, including the refrigerating engineer and electrician, to return to work until better quarters were provided, the Niagara arrived at Auckland from Sydney tit 10.15 to-night instead of early in the morning. She had it stormy passage until she passed the Three Kings, but although loose articles in cabins and the purser’s office were thrown about no damage was done. It was reported on arrival that an arrangement had been arrived at with the engineers whereby improved accommodation would he provided when the ship reached Sydney on her next voyage south and was laid up tor another month’s overhaul. It is proposed to convert part of the after lirst-clasS section into engineers’ quarters. Ihe main complaint about tho?e they at present occupy is that there arc no portholes and that in one, particularly, the noise of the silver pantry where dishes are being washed almost all,the time kept tiie men awake who are expected to serve watch and watch in the engine- room. This pantry is next door to one of the engineer’s cabins. Among the passengers was Sir James Grose returning from a holiday visit to Australia and two Czech refugees and several German Jews.
