GUARANTEED PRICES.
MEETING IN HASTINGS. OPPOSITION SHOWN. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, June 6. A meeting of 400 farmers from all parts of Hawke's Bay adopted a resolution condemning the guaranteed price scheme and urging tho freeing of the exchange rate. Only four dissented. . Addressing the meeting, the president of the New Zealand Sheepowners’ Federation (Air H. D. Aeland) said that if the exchange were allowed to go to its true value it would rise at least to 150 instead of the present 325. “AVe should be getting at least 20 per cent, more for our wool la in h, mutton, and beef tor export ’to-dav in New Zealand money ll we had a free exchange,” said Air Aeland. Referring to the guaranteed price scheme, the provincial president of the Now Zealand Farmers’ Union (Mi Lloyd Hammond) said the dairy industry went so far last year as to have a committee set up to determine the price, but the Government replied that an increase of three farthing a pound would wreck the scheme. “If an additional three farthings would wreck this scheme, how would the Government pay an additional pj.rht or nine millions to assist, sheepfarmers?” asked Air Hammond.
