DEBATING SOCIETY.
At the weekly meeting of the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society, on Wednesday, the British Empire was the chief topic. Dir H. G. Mills presided and Mr E. Opie acted as adjudicator. The first part •was devoted to six-minute speeches on events in the reign of Queen Victoria, those taking part being Mrs M. Turner (who spoke on Queen Victoria), Mr R. Buchan (the Crimean War), Mr Martin (the Boer War), Mrs R. Livingstone (land settlement of New Zealand), and Mr W. MeAuley (Queen Victoria). The winner of the King Cup for the best prepared speech was Mr E. C. Watson. The debate was “That home rule for India is desirable." The affirmative won and those who took part were Mrs L. Bennett, Miss E. Bird, Messrs J. S. Hornblow, A. C. Philpott, T. C. Watson and S. J. King. The winner of the Mrs S. M. Carlton medal was Mrs Bennett and Mrs Bennett and Mr Watson tied for the A. E. Wright medallion, presented for best delivery.
