STERN NOTES.

POLISH-DANZIG TENSION. BORDER INCIDENT. LONDON, May 22. Stern notes were exchanged between Danzig and Poland after two frontier incidents yesterday, in which Herr Gruebner, a Danzig citizen, was killed. Polish newspapers declare that the men who attacked the Customs house at Kalthof were Germans from East Prussia and not Danzig citizens. It is emphasised that the Polish Customs officials gave no cause for a provocative act. The second frontier incident is reported to have occurred at Pieckel, the most southern point of Danzig territory. Customs officials there telephoned advising that they were barricaded in tho Customs house, which uniformed Storm Troopers were attacking, shouting .anti-Polish slogans and demanding the blood of the Polish Customs officers. Following these incidents, the Polish Government sent a Note to the Danzig Senate demanding a stringent inquiry into the Kalthof affair, reparations ior the damage done, and assurances for the safety of the Polish citizens in the Free City of Danzig. The Danzig Senate replied by sending .a Note demanding compensation for Herr Grnebner’s relatives, an apology from the Polish Government, and tho surrender of M. Murawski, a Polish citizen who shot tho former. RESCUE ORDERED. A Warsaw message states that as the result of a strong protest by the Polish Commissioner at Danzig (M. Chodacki), the Senate has ordered the police to rescue the Poles besieged at Pieckel. Die Nazis dispersed shouting: “We shall return.” It is understood M. Chodacki told the Senate unless the police guaranteed the safety of Polish officials, Poland would take her own measures. explosivFsubject. NO LEAGUE DISCUSSION. GENEVA, May 22. The status of Danzig is not included in the League Council’s agenda. The advisory committee may not discuss it on the ‘grounds that the time is inopportune for dealing with explosive subjects.
