WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

PERSONAL. The late Airs M. P. A’Court, wif e of Air Maurice C. A’Court, ot fet a ' tion Street, AA’oodville, whose death took place recently in the Dannevirke Hospital, was aged 32 years. The deceased lady, who was born at Foxton, was the daughter of Airs A. Procter (Tahoraite) and the late Afr Procter. She lived at Linton for manv years, at which settlement her marriage took place. The late Afrs A Court had not enjoyed good health for a considerable period, and prior to her husband’s transfer to the locn.l railway branch the family resided at Bonny Glen (Marton), Makino Road (Feilding), Himatnngi, Oakleigh (Whangarei) and Hatuma. (Central Hawke’s Bay). She leaves a familv of three children. The esteem in which the late Afrs A'Court was held was evidenced by the large attendance at the funeral of friends from various districts. The cortege included representatives of the Railway Department. There were numerous Moral emblems. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. B P. Williams. Mr D. R. Scorgic. of the clerical didivision of the Railway Department, is under transfer from Woodville to Auckland. ATr and Mrs Niehol, of AViaitaki Valley (Gore) and Airs Webster and her son. Air D. Webster (Dargaviile) have been recent guests of Rev. D. H. Hay and Mrs Hay, at the Alanse. NOTEH Sand was distributed over A’ogel Street during the week, but, consequent on showers of rain, the thoroughfare lias again become very sloppy. The next eonting will probably be of metal chips. The Alay synod of the Hawke’s Bay-Manawatu district of the Methodist Church will be held at Dannevirke on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday afternoon Rev. J. H. Allen (Feilding) will deal with home mission matters; in the afternoon Rev. C. Eaton will speak on “Expository Preaching,’’ and at night the chief speaker at an inspirational meeting will be Rev. A. Petch. Qn Tuesday Rev. C. H. Olds. Rev. A. Blakemore, and Rev. S. AA’erren will deliver addresses. The latter minister will refer to the question of evangelism under modern conditions, tlw subject of the social and personal implications of one of the doctrines of the church will be entrusted to Rev. C. H. Olds and Rev. A. Blakemore. Rev. T. Coatsworth (Woodville) and Rev. AVI E. Moore (Pahiatua) intend being present. Alotorists have complained of the threatening attitude of some cattle they encountered on the Gorge Road. One beast was impounded, but later cleared the pound rails to escape. A sum of about £4OOO was paid out to suppliers by the United Co-opera-tive Dairy Co. to-day tor the supply of buttertat during the past month. The estimated decline in local production during the season now ending is estimated by one leading dairy farmer at about 10 per cent., the decrease being very marked during the month of April. PAHIATUA. TARARUA POWER BOARD. Air J. D. AVilson presided at the annual meeting of the Tararun Electric Power Board, yesterday. The other members present were Alessrs P. Davies, A. AA’. Bisset, ,T. G. Brechin, AA r . Simpson, J. B. Carruthers. E. AA 7 . Cheetham, AV. Britland, T. Fouhy, and L. Johnston. Leave of absence was granted Air C. T. Richardson. Air AV. T. Taylor, secretary-manager, reported that the Mayor of Pahiatua (Air S. K. I Siddells) had waited on the engineer and himself regarding the installation of mercury vapour lights at Pahiatua ; after a thorough investigation he had completed a price for the consideration of the board which compared more than favourably with similar quotations of other boards.—lt was resolved to submit the price to both the Eketnhuna and Pahiatua Borough Councils for their approval. AA’hen going through items of payment, Mr J. G. Brechin asked the manager-secretary if the New Zealand Road Service was better since the Railway Department had taken the transport over. The secretary stated that at present the cost was 10 per cent, higher. The secretary-manager reported; The year has been marked by increasing clemand, more than ordinary expansion, and distinct consolidation. The figures given below are in every instance based on the returns especially prepared for the Public AVorks Department, and may be taken as disclosing the true position ns at Ain rob 31 of this year. As the engineer will show, our lines have been extended into the Akitio County, the reticulation of the township of ‘Pongaroa being entirely completed, and altogether 20 miles of main and secondary lines have been built and service given to the settlers along the route in that county. Minor extensions in other parts of the district were also completed. The total capital expenditure on new lines for the year was £9090. The capital expenditure on the system was £13,288. Against the accumulated net. profit of £4824 shown in the 1937-38 net revenue account the sum of £3OOO has been charged, thereby reducing the prelimary expenses by that amount. A further charge of £1765 has been debited against the accumulated sum referred to for the value of the switch gear r.t Mangamnire sub-station transferred to the Public AVorks Department. The total net turnover for the year was £39,923. The net profit on this amount, namely, £1046, representing approximately 2.6 per cent., shows the narrow margin on the year s siorkitig. However, the consolation remains with us that the board is rendering a reasonably cheap service to consumers in a sparselv populated area. The main growth throughout the year has been on the residential load. Other phases of demand have not kept in step with this increase. In all 561 ranges aie now installed and 620 water heaters are connected to the system. There are 9 014 consumers, of which number practically 27 per cent, are using electric ranges. The chief inference which it is fair to draw for the current year prompted by the amount of the net profit for the' past year, is this: The net profit for this year will not show a,iv material increase chief y for the reason that the inclusion of the Akitio Countv in the inner area has introduced‘a constituent consumer demanding a residential supply, the preponderating portion ol which will he on the heating and cooking rate, namely, one penny. This inference is cautiously modified by the possibility that the countv as a consumer may not consume‘to the full amount of its guarantee. The result will be that balances will be collectable up to the amount ot the guaranteed revenue.
