TERRACE END SCHOOL.

ATTENDANCES VERY GOOD. The headmaster (Mr A. IV. Thompson) reported to the Terrace End School Committee last night that the number of children on the roll was 597. The daily attendances during the month had been very good, although a few children had been absent owing to colds and influenza. “Nurse McDonald, of the dental clinic, has been transferred to the central clinic in King Street,” added the report, “and Nurses Reid and Noble are at present in charge at this school. Dental fees have come in most satisfactorily, although a few parents have not paid or applied for exemption. The roll for this year is nearly closed. The environment certificate has been endorsed for the year 1938. Nurse Cox has visited the school and tested the eyesight of most of the pupils. Anzac Day will be ol>served by the usual ceremony at the school on Tuesday next at 9.30 a.m. The first term will end on May 5. The visiting committee. Messrs E. G. Bennett and K. G. Chamberlain, visited the school to-day.” The headmaster added that the lifesaving awards for the 1938-39 season were: Bronze medallions 4, intermediate certificates 27, elementary certificates 22, primary certificates 23; total 76. The meeting was presided over by Mr IV. B. Tennent, others present being Messrs J. Fyfe, it. C. Donald, L. Gardner. H. L. Cunninghame, H. D. Milne, K. G. Chamberlain (secretary) and A. W. Thompson. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. P. Wix.

The Wanganui Education Board advised the appointment of Miss Gladys Neill as assistant mistress at the school. Miss Neill has previously served at College Street, and was also a probationary assistant at Terrace End a few years ago. The secretary of the Milson School Committee (Mr L. G. Robertson) wrote thanking the committee for allowing the children of the Milson School to use the school baths. A donation of £2 2s “ns a small token of gratitude” was enclosed in the letter. The Manawatu Bov Scouts’ Association also thanked the committee for the use of the school baths for swimming competitions Messrs Cunninghame and Donald were appointed a visiting committee for next month. Mr Cunninghame will be the principal speaker at the Anzac Dav ceremony, and Rev. F. S. Ramson will also be invited to attend.
