WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

ANNUAL MEETING AT AWAHURI. Thoro was an attendance of thirty members at the annual meeting of the Awahuri Women’s Institute over which Afrs Bond presided. A vote of sympathy was carried with Afrs Baker, who lias suffered bereavement. Sympathy was also expressed with Airs Rowlands, who lias her husband and son both in hospital. It was decided not to enter an exhibit in the Palmerston North Show. Delegates to attend the annual federation meeting in April are Afesdames Iv O. Bond and Cole; it was decided to nominate Afrs B. Simpson (Alakino) for the executive. In reference to the letter from the Community Centre, it was decided to hold the monthly mooting for A!ay there if suitable. The institute decided to join up with the l’an Pacific Women's Association. The report of the birthday function was given and the points prizes presented to the winners of the competitions. Flowers: Aliss l’earco 1, Aliss Henson 2. Cooking and handwork: Afrs Christian 1, Airs Nicholson 2, Mrs Terry 3. The competition for the Institute for the Blind was won by Airs J. B. Young. Gifts wore also given to Alisscs Y. Bennett and J. AlcCallum who have kindly got the hall ready each afternoon. The following report was presented by Airs Cole: “Of the committee meetings held during the year one was to consider remits for the Dominion conference. There have been good entries in the best bloom competition, but not quite so many in the other competitions. The programmes were arranged and written out by sub-commit-tees. A dance was held to raise funds to send a delegate to the conference; a gift for the table was donated by Airs Haytliornc. Proceeds from a bring and buy stall were sent; to tile Leper Stalibn and birthday gifts have been sent to the chi Idren of the Institute for the Blind, Airs and Miss Bennett kindly donating a cushion for competition. A donation was also made for furthering of the work among the Maori Women’s Institutes. Our thanks arc duo to demonstrators, hostesses, stall and competition stewards, the Press and all who have helped in any way during the past year.” The financial statement was given by Afrs Nicholson and showed a good credit balance. The president in her remarks said : “We arc not as financial as last year owing to other attractions in the . district that needed our help. It is my wish that our institue will go on improving, and I hope we will be able to something along to the Centennial Exhibition. _ I thank all for the _ splendid co-operation given me and especially for the kindness during my illness. I also thank the secretary (Afrs Cole) and treasurer (Mrs Nicholson). I also thank the vice-presi-dents and committee. I ask that the same co-operation lie given the new president. Thanks arc also due to Aliss Pearce and Mrs Rcdmaync for the floral work, Press correspondent, junior members for getting the ball ready, competition and stall stewards, and the daily Press. I would suggest that we arrange another trip or two.” Airs Hart kindly acted as scrutineer for the ballot for president. The result saw Airs Haythorne elected. Mrs Goodman congratulated the members on their choice and appealed to all to give Airs Haythorne their whole-hearted support. Mrs Goodman thanked those for the support given iter and wished Mrs Haythorne a pleasant term. When returning thanks for confidence placed in her, Airs Haythorne spoke in glowing terms of the splendid work of Afrs Bond (who did not seek office). Afrs Rcdmaync (vice-president) thanked Mrs Bond and Mrs Nicholson (retiring treasurer) for their splendid service and invited both to meet the members at the Rosco tearooms. The following were elected to the commitce: Mesdames Manson, Port, P. Campbell. Co’.e, lledmayne. Goodman, Thompson, O'i'arrcll, Nicholson and Bennett. It was. decided to have the best bloom competition with three prizes ■ at the end of the year. Aliss Pearce offerj ed to donate the first prize. Airs P. Campbell was given charge of the visitors book. A roll call for suggestions for the programme was well responded to. Afternoon tea was served by the retiring committco. . A committee meeting was held subsequent to the annual meeting, when Airs Haythorne presided. The following were elected i Secretary, Airs Oolc (rc-clcetcd), trasurcr, Airs Redmavne; vice-presidents, Alcsdatnes Goodman and O’ barrel!; flower steward. Aliss Pearce; competitions, Afiss K Alanson; cake steward, Mrs E. O. Bond; Press correspondent for all institute activities, Airs Goodman. Hostesses for April meeting, Afcsdamcs E. 0. and A Bond, and TT.’ Port. The competition is to lie for three pikelets. It was decided to have a social afiernoon. ATrs ITaytborne to arrange for items. Programmes arc to lie drawn up at a later meeting.—Awahuri correspondent. SHANNON INSTITUTE. The Shannon Institute held a successful birthday party, the Parish Hall being filled to capacity. Visitors were present from many neighbouring institutes, the Opiki, Tokomaru, Kimberley, and Levin presidents making presentation of posies to the Shannon president, secretary, and treasurer. Kimberley also included one to Mrs War-ing-Taylor as the federation representative. Dancing, for which Airs Atkinson, of Tokomaru, supplied music, was interspersed with items contributed by Aliss Thompson (Koxton), Aliss Campbell (Winton), Pat Caldwell, Shona Johnston, Valerio. Young, Betty McAleeking, Clarice Sinclair, Helene Croriquest, Trevor King, Airs Allorby and Airs Aislabio. Mr J. T. Bovis was in control of the programme. The handsome birthday cake, which was made by Airs J. Easton and iced by Airs Allorby, was ceremoniously cut by the Mayoress (Airs E. Butt, the institute’s first president) and Mrs T. ITcnsman (the eldest member). Complimentary speeches were, made to the institute on their social activities in the district and good wishes extended for their future prosperity. Airs Clough (secretary) and Miss Barber (treasurer) were recipients of posies from members in recognition of

their work, and Airs Clough, in expressing thanks, made reference to the splendid work of Airs Easton, saying that the institute was very fortunate in having such an energetic and popular president. Airs Aim and Mrs A. Thomson wore presented with trophies won in competitions held during the year.—Shannon correspondent.
