INCIDENT AT CONCLAVE

ROME, March 7,

Cardinal Pacelli tripped and fell heavily on the floor of tho Sistine Chapel on the first day of the Conclave of Cardinals, which finally elected him Pope Pius XII. His Holiness was backing away after a conversation with another Cardinal, and failed to notice three shallow steps behind him. Tripping, he half-turned, and Jell heavily on his right side. Rising immediately, he w’alkcd on, politely protesting against the attentions of those about him. Professor Milani, the medical adviser of the late Pope Pius XI, was called, but Cardinal Pacelli waved him away, asserting that he was perfectly alt rl 'The Vatican City news service states that the Pope’s election was unanimous except for his own vote.
