SYDNEY WOOL SALES.
: MARKET FIRM. SYDNEY, March 27. At the| wool sales to-day the market ■was firm 'at last week’s _ closing rates. Gteasy Merino fleece realised 20d. Of a total of 1),989 bales offered, 9140 were sold at auctiory and 1159 privately. The average price last! week was £l3 4s lid a bale, equal to .0.9 d a lb. A farner at Mohikiwi, Westland, has had Iclearly demonstrated to him the preference shown by stock for properly managed pastures. A paddock was well harrowed and top-dressed with superphosphate in the spring, a small area of about a chain square being left untreated. Through the whole of the si.rnmer never a cow was to be seen on this patch according to the farmer, and it consequently took _on the rough, Karsh appearance typical of neglected grassland. In spite of similar demonstrations in various parts of the dstrict, the regular harrowing of pastures is a practice too often neglected!on the West Coast of the South Island.
