TWO MOTORISTS FINED

CANCELLATION OF LICENSES.

Two motorists were fined for being intoxicated when in charge of cars and had their driving licenses cancelled when they appeared before Air H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday.

Janies Sloane Parsons, motor mechanic, aged 38, was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car in Featherston Street on March 24. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre stated that a constable saw a car come along Featherston Street at a fast pace and draw up outside an hotel, where tho driver and another man changed over at the wheel. Defendant, who had driven the car to the hotel, was unsteady on his feet and twenty minutes later a doctor certified that he was intoxicated and unfit to drivo a car.

Mr A. M. Ongley, who appeared for defendant, said that the latter had only driven the car a short distance from tho time when lie realised that lie was unfit to drive, and was allowing his companion to take tho wheel when the constable intervened. Defendant was fined £lO and ordered to pay £1 7s Gd in expenses. His driving license was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another for eighteen months. Itangi Paki, farmer, of Itangiotu, was charged with being intoxicated when, in charge of a car on tho main highway near Tiakitaliuna on March 23. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre stated that at 5.50 p.m. on that date Traffic Inspector J. IT. Semple was patrolling tho highway when be saw a small ear being driven very erratically from side to side of tho road, so much so that its tyres were throwing up the dust on each side of the road in turn. Thinking that something was radically wrong with the driver, lie followed him for 2£ miles, sounding his siren at intervals, and finally passed and stopped him. The driver of the small car was defendant who had been passing vehicles in both directions. He admitted having had up to 20 pints of beer that afternoon, and a doctor certified him to be in an unfit state to be in charge of a car. Defendant was fined £lO and ordered to pay £1 Is medical expenses, being allowed three months in which to pay. His driving license was cancelled and lie was prohibited from obtaining another for 18 months.
