DIOCESAN APPEAL.

CATHEDRAL FUND. A well-attended meeting of bishop's helpers and meml>ers of the Palmerston North executive was held at All Saints’ School room on Monday evening to hear an address from Canon D. B. Malcolm, organising secretary lor the diocese. Mr It. S- Abraham, chairman of the Palmerston North citizens’ committee, presided. Canon Malcolm gave an interesting resume of the progress made in the enedtivour to erect a cathedral worthy of the Capital City of the Dominion from the very early days of the province, when a start was made by Bishop Abraham. It had now been determined that the Wellington Cathedral should he the Diocesan Centenary Memorial, and that the foundation stone should lie laid in 1940. The position to-day was that the whole of the magnificent site for the cathedral, opposite Parliament Buildings, was paid for and the central committee had £BS 000 in cash and promises for the Centenary Fund. Cash and promises from Palmerston North city and district to date totalled £2534. There were, therefore, no grounds for pessimism, but a feeling of satisfaction that so much had been done in the last six months, and it should engender a determination to carry out the proposal to its fruition. Canon Malcolm outlined and discussed with the helpers a plan of campaign for the present year and gave many racy examples of the experiences of collectors and his advice on the best way to meet difficulties. Canon G. Y. Woodward expressed the thanks of the meeting to Canon Malcolm for bis most interesting and helpful address, and expressed the opinion that when the final figures were published Palmerston North would be found to be at the head of the list. . . , A resolution was carried of deep sympathy with the Bishop and Mrs Holland in regard to the Bishop’s serious illness, and the district’s sincere hope that his complete recovery will not long he delayed. The meeting closed with thanks to the chair.
