It is understood that Japan has offered the return of the Caroline Islands to Germany as a gesture, but only until Herr Hitler achieves his colonial ambitions.
The Caroline Islands are a North-West Pacific group covering an area of about 390 square miles. Together with the Palew Islands and I.adrone or Marianne Islands, the groups formerly were Spanish Territory but, with the exception of Guam, were sold in 1899 to Germany. Japan began her control of the Caroline group in 1914. some months after the outbreak- of the Great War, and later Germany's oversea territorial possessions in that quarter were given under mandate to Japan. Until her withdrawal from the League of Nations Japan governed the islands by mandate from the League, and still retains tlic right to them until her resignation, from the league takes effect. The. population of the islands is given as 39, /18 in a 1933 census.
