Lowry, since that great mare Desert (Told, and who has improved so much in the last few months that he threatens to challenge seriously the laurels of his old rival Defaulter when the latter returns to New Zealand, scored a triumph intheAwapuni (Told Cup on the first day of the Manawatu Itacing Club’s autumn meeting yesterday. Royal Chief, who finished second to Stretto last year, when the time was 2 2-ssec faster under similar conditions to yesterday’s, and established a record, was sent out favourite by the public, but it appeared that Beaupartir had him beaten at any stage of the race.
