USE OF ARECOLINE. ALLEGATIONS DENIED. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, March 24. In connection with reported statements at the annual conference of the Feleration of New Zealand Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, that veterinarians had reported several cases of poisoning of dogs, some fatal, from the use arecoline, Dr E. W. Bennett, research officer of the department for Hydatid Research and Prevention, says: “For the second time the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Anima's lias been responsible for reports of fatalities among dogs through the use of arecoline. The first report was made by the Christchurch branch, which declined to publish any explanation. The claim was examined by me and proved to be void of foundation. Now the Wellington Society makes the same allegation and, according to reports, the Canterbury delegate to the conference, among various mis-statements, has failed to deny or substantiate the .Christchurch allegations, but blames ■■". e public and the card of instructions. "Unless these societies prove or deny the allegations they will probably lie regarded by the public as attempting to obstruct the movement.” Arecoline is being supplied to owners of dogs by local authorities for use in tho prevention of hydatids.
