SCOTTISH REGIMENT.

COMMANDER APPOINTED. Per Press Association. AYELLINGTON, Alarch. 23. The appointment of Alajor Allan Ross to the first command of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment was gazetted to-night. Major Ross, who is assist-ant-secretary of the Department of External Affairs and Cook Islands, has been associated with the AA'ellingto-n Regiment for ten years and commanded Company (suburban platoons). His earliest service _ was with the Post and Telegraph units in AYellington. in which he gained his commission in 1919. He went to Samoa, where from 1925 to 1928 be was A.D.C. to the Administrator, Sir George Richardson. On his return to AA’ellington he joined the AA'ellington Regiment, in which he rose to the rank of major, his promotion being gazetted in February. 1937. He did not see active service in the Great AVar, being in camp with the New Zealand reinforcements when the Armistice was signed. In an interview, Alajor Ross said that a number of officers had been recommended to form a nucleus for the companies in the four main centres, .and their appointment was awaiting approval of the Armv Department. This establishment of officers would be of a minimum strength to provide for the maximum of vacancies to lx? filled from the ranks, the aim being to encourage recruits to seek promotion. The intention was to fret the four companies into camp at some time during the present year, said Alajor Ross. “The suggestion bv the .Mayor or AYcllington (AH T. C. A. Hi si op) of a gathering of the Scottish units in Avellington during the Centennial year appeals to us very strongly.” Alajor Ross said. “Sydney Scottish people hope to be represented here next year, and it Tniirht be possible to arrange a gathering while they arc in Wellington It is one of our aims, but will depend on the approval of the Army Department.”
