The price of meat had been fixed by butchers as follows: —Mutton chops, 5d a lb; forequarters, 2)d; logs, 4RI; shoulders, 3-J-dj rump steak (beef), 7d; sirloin. sd. A gun club had been formed in Palmerston North. . A lengthy discussion took place regarding the matter of live bird shoots, and it was decided, by a. big majority, that only clay birds be used. The British Press had featured the offer of the New Zealand Government of a dreadnought for the navy. The action was described as a stimulant to the Mother Country to put patriotism above party differences. Twenty-four Swiss immigrants, mostly farmers, had arrived by the M.arama and settled in Taranaki. A cheese weighing half a ton had been manufactured for exhibition at the Manawatu Show. Coins to the value of £ls had been placed in it .and purchasers of lib pieces stood the chance of getting anything from. 3d to half a sovereign.
