ATHLETIC RIVALRY
PETONE TEAM’S VISIT. There was keen rivalry at the Sportsground, on Saturday night, when athletes and cyclists from the Palmerston North Club met visitors from the Petone Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, in competition for a cuj) presented by Mr 0. Webber, a vice-president of the Petone Club. The trophy was won by the Palmerston North Club by 54 points to 36. It has been decided to make the contest an annual one. In accepting the cup from Mr D. McCarthy (chairman of the Petone executive), Air C. Stagpoole (president of the Palmerston North Club) . expressed appreciation at Mr Webber’s generosity and thanked the Petone athletes for making the trip. Under most favourable conditions the events were run in quick succession and a good number of spectators (despite many counter-attractions) had their attention occupied by splendid entertainment. The Petone team comprised 28 athletes, including nine cyclists, six women runners, six junior runners and seven senior men. The team managers were Messrs H. Sanders and E. Lacey and the chaperone Mrs Laurie, while the secretary, Mr H. J. Sutherland, was also present. Tn the women’s events. Miss J. Crompton, the Wellington sprint champion, although conceding good handicaps to her opponents, performed with credit. Other Petone runners in Misses Marston, Cummings. Greenfield and Nicholas were placed in nearly every event they competed in. Tneed, they dominated the women s section of the programme. The cyclists provided some exciting finishes, the Poe brothers from Petone. who are well-known competitors at local meetings, Biggs and Pennington being well to the fore. Among the local men, Milroy shone as the most consistent performer, and MeCardle and Church, although the latter did not show groat finishing power, also rode well. Morgan, a local man, was in tine fettle in the 100 yards, winning his heat and the final from the 8 yards mark. The 220 vards. 880 yards and the mile all went to local runners, who had a definite advantage in this section. PICNIC HELD. The visiting athletes and their supporters to the number of 53 were the guests of tbi- Palmerston North .Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club at a picnic held at Tangi moiinii yesterday. Lunch was served in the hall by an energetic band of ladies assisted by members of the committee. Mr Saunder took the opportunity of making a presentation to Miss J. Crampton. a member of the Petone Club, for her meritorious performance in gaining three provincial championships at the recent meeting held in Wellington. lie also thanked the Palmerston North Club for their hospitality. Mr Stagpoole replied, thanking the Petone Club for coming to Palmerston North city and for the sporting way in which they had conducted themselves in the competition.
