EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” MARCH 20, 1909. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) promised to motor over the route of the proposed railway and also that the Government would undertake a survey of it. Over 8000 postmen had joined in a general strike in Paris. There were 5,1KK),000 letters and 275.000 telegrams undelivered, and the food supply had become affected through orders not being delivered. A number of British Peers and Commoners signed a’ requisition asking Mr Asquith for an inquiry into the administration of the Admiralty. Meetings were being held in London and Liverpool Into what was considered a naval crisis. i A great aero exhibition had opened in London. It embraced aeroplanes and dirigible balloons and was a magnificent display. A Bill providing for votes for women was read the second time in the House of Commons by 157 votes to 122.
