The death is announced in London of Rear-Admiral Sir Douglas Brownrigg He was 71 years of age. The pending retirement of Mr W. W. Samson, Registrar of the Supreme Court and sheriff in Wellington, and registrar of the Court of Appeal, has been announced. Mr Samson will relinquish his duties about the end of June.

Due to the Mangaonoho School being closed by the Wanganui Education Board under tho consolidation scheme, there has been brought to an end 20 years of service on the school committee by Mr W. Rowe. At its meeting yesterday the board decided to send Mr Rowe a letter expressing appreciation of his services. Rev. V. C. Venimore, M.A., 8.D., who will take up his appointment as vicar of St. Peter’s Parish, Gonville, Wanganui, in succession to Rev. C. W. Soloman next week, returned from Sydney yesterday. He has spent two years in England, where he was assistant at St. Paul’s Church, Thornton Heath, Surrey. Prior .to that he acted for a time as assistant-curate at All Saints’, Palmerston North. Mr H. I. Thodey, inspector for New Zealand for the Bank of Australasia, will retire on April 10 after 44 years’ service in the bank in Australia and New Zealand. Mr Thodey will be succeeded by Mr E. A. Cameron, who has been manager of the Auckland branch of the bank since 1936. Mr li. G. Bennett, accountant at the Auckland branch, will succeed Mr Cameron as manager.

At the conclusion of the business section of the conference ■of thd New Zealand Library Association in Palmerston North, yesterday, eulogistic reference was made to the services of the retiring president (Mr T. D. H. Hall). In moving a resolution placing on record the council’s appreciation, Mr L. McKenzie (Wellington) said that Mr Hall brought to his office experience and training which were invaluable to the association. His wise rulings and impartial judgment made him an ideal leader. The resolution was seconded by Mr J. Norrie and carried by acclamation.
