NOTES. Miss D. Watson has left to spend a holiday in Wellington. Miss N. Hewitt is on holiday in the vj e J son district. Mir and Mrs E. It. '\{! lk er have returned from a visit to rere Beach. Mrs Carlyon, oi feedcde Street, has returned from a holiday spent in the North Auckland district. At tlic last meeting of the Paiiiutua Borough Council, Cr. Watts raised the question ot whether the council should do something about keeping, order at dances. Cr. Watts said that there had been a light at a dance on Saturday night, in which a young man had ' had his jaw broken, and he thought the police should lie in control to prevent such occurrences, which, if they were allowed to continue, would give the town a bad name. r J 'he Mayor (Mr S. K. Siddels) remarked that it was a very vexed question, and there was a remit from the Mosgiel Council to be brought forward at the next Municipal'Conference with regard to police officers being given wider powers ior the control of public dances. A similar remit had been brought up at the last conference at New Plymouth, and the principle had been approved by the Government, but no action taken. The question was whether the council should take action to revoke the licenses ol : halls where such disturbances occurred. The police had no power to interfere inside, although they could prevent disturbances outside a hall. It was agreed that the police be notified of the case cited and that they be asked to attend future dances. PADDLING POOL. A suggestion was made by Cr. Carthew, at the meeting of the Borough Council, that a paddling pool he made at the baths. This work could lie done very cheaply under the No. 13 scheme, and children would thus lie induced to go to the baths at an age. At present they would have to look after themselves in three feet of water, which prevented many from goinm He moved a recommendation to the works committee to go into the ; question and bring down an estimate of the cost. After a discussion, an amendment was carried that the baths and recreation committee lie asked to i bring down a report, after which the ■ question of location -could be consid- j ered.
