EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD/’ FEBRUARY 16, 1909. The Australian cricket team to go to England was selected as follows : Carter, Cotter, Noble, Macartney, Trumper, Wliitty, Gregory, Bardsley (New South Wales), Ransford, Armstrong, Carkcek, Macalister (Victoria), O’Connor (South Australia) and Hartigan (Queensland). Active steps were being taken to promite a national testimonial to Mr W. F. Massey (Leader of the Opposition). It was felt that even outside the ranks of Mr Massey’s political supporters there were hundreds of people who recognised his sturdy integrity and sterling worth. At a meeting of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr J. Murray, M.A., upon whom, as temporary assistant master, the brunt of preparation work had fallen during 1908. . _
A holding of 77 acres in the Taranaki district was offered for sale at 10s 4d per acre. The steamer Fifeshiro arrived in Auckland from Liverpool with 164 immigrants aboard. They represented diverse callings, although trades predominated.
