GRASS FIRE AT BAINESSE.
200 ACRES DESTROYED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Feb. 15. A cigarette butt carelessly thrown into a gorse bush on a property at Bainesse was responsible for over 200 acres of pasture and many fences being destroyed yesterday. Twenty-ono men fought the flames lor a considerable time, checking their onrush juot on the edge of the peat swamp on Mr D. C. Cook's property. Had the fire reached the swamp it would have burned for weeks and reached as far as Manga whata. The outbreak occurred on Mr .1. Cortv foot's Bainesse property and spread with great rapidity through the tinder dry grass, which is unusually long in this locality. Despite the efforts of a gang of men the flames swept the countryside as far ea-<t aii l'yko Road, leaving a blackened trail behind it.
