The national swimming championships were officially opened this morning at Invercargill with 100 competitors assembled to contest the various events. A welcome was extended by Mr A. E. McGrath, the president of the Southland Centre, Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., and Mr J. R. Hanan (Mayor). Three titles changed hands this evening. P. Hanan (Auckland), holder of the men’s 100 yards free-style championship, was beaten by R. Hatchwell (Wellington); L. Newell (Canterbury), ono mile men’s free-style champion, was beaten by A. T. F. Stokes (Canterbury); P. E. Matliieson (Auckland), 4(10 metres moil's backstroke champion, although he finished, an ea-sy first, was disqualified for an incorrect turning .and the title went to C. Cl.iff (Canterbury). Results; 100 yards men’s free-style.—First heat: li. Hatchwell (Wellington) 1. N. Crump (Auckland) 2, A. C. Millar (Southland) 3; time, 56 l-ssec. Second heat: P. Hanan (Auckland) 1, A. Pascoe (Auckland) 2, F. Pennington (Wellington) 3; time, 56 4-ssec. Final: Hatchwell 1, Hanan 2, Crump 3. Won bv a touch, a yard between second and third. Time, 56 l-ssec. One mile men’s free-style.—Final: A. T. F. Stokes (Canterbury) 1, L. Newell (Canterbury) 2, A. W. Pascoe (Auckland) 3. Won by 20 yards. 40 yards l>etween second and third. Time, 23min 12 l-ssec. 220 yards men’s breaststroke. — Final; J. C. W. Davies (Taranaki) 1, Z. Dyson (Otago) 2, L. Smith (Wanganui) 3. Won by inches, two yards between second and third. Time, 3min 6 l-s*c. 220 yards women’s free-style.—Miss C. Garvin (Otago) 1, Miss K. Grey (Auckland) 2, Miss I. Purdie (Otago) 3. Won by a touch, a yard between second and third. Time, 2min 44 2-ssec. 400 metres men’s backstroke. —C. Cliff (Canterbury) 1, C. Martin (Southland) 2, N. D. Berry (Southland) 3. Won by 12 yards, three yards tetween second and third. Time, smin 47sec. 133 1-3 yards inter-provincial scratch relay.—Auckland 1, Southland 2. Otago 3. Won by two feet. Time, G7see. Water polo.—First round: Otago A teat Otago B, 10 —4; Canterbury beat Southland B, 9 —o. Second round: Otago A drew with Canterbury, 2—2; Soutldand A beat Otago B, 7 —2.
