NEW INDUSTRY IN CITY.

An industry calling for a high degree of technical knowledge and skilled workmanship, but up to the present not carried out in its entirety in New Zealand, is the making of pianos. In Palmerston North a start has been made in what is termed rebuilding and the same knowledge and skill is necessary in this work. Pianos, like everything else, are subject to changes in style, and consequently a piano built a few years ago may be perfect mechanically, but out-of-date in appearance. Instruments such as these are being completely dissembled and then rebuilt with new cases and modern styling, and finisher] in shades to match other modern furniture. Specially selected materials must be used, and the greatest care exercised in every stage. The actions are reconditioned and finally the instrument is tuned and toned, making it once more equal to. and in respect of some materials, even superior to its original state. This work is being carried out a.t their own factory by the firm of Mounseys, Ltd., who are already well-known for their reconditioned pianos, and their new departure in completely rebuilding is a further step in the extension of their progressive activities.—P.B.A.
