LAWN TENNIS
ASSOCIATION MEETS. LOWER HUTT VISIT. Mr J. T. McDonald presided at a committee meeting of the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association, last night. Also present were: Mrs B. French, Messrs C. C. Yates, L. A. Reichenbaoh, D. W. Creed, J. Christie and the secretary (Mr R. 0. Haddon). A letter was received from Mr S. J. Castle accepting appointment as delegate of the Manawatu Association on the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association consequent on the resignation of Mr Hardie Boys. The Hutt Valley Sub-Association, in answer to an invitation from the Manawatu Association, advised that it would be sending a team of juniors (six boys and six grls) to Palmerston North on February 19 to compete against a local side. Considering, too, that the match in December last between the top players of the two associations had been “washed out,” the Hutt Valley body suggested that on this date a team ol' four men and four women should also be sent. The action of the secretary in accepting the, offer of the extra players was confirmed. A discussion arose as the result of a letter from a member of the representative team on the question of travelling expenses for players taking part in matches in outside districts. A decision was made that the association required all players to pay their own expenses, but reserved the right, in special circumstances, to refund portion or all of the expenses. In connection with the Physical Fitness Week, it was resolved to circularise the clubs asking them to participate in a parade of tennis players on February 25. Endeavours will he made to have full representation, each club to have an appropriate slogan on a banner.
The chairman referred to the representative players’ success in their engagement with the Wairarapa Association at Masterton on Saturday. It was decided to send a letter thanking the Wairarapa Association for its hospitality. Mr McDonald said that there had been some agitation to challenge against Hawke’s Bay for the Christie Cup, but he felt that they could let the matter pass this year. This view was in accord with the ideas ofi other members, and it was decided to follow this course. An invitation is to he extended to the Wanganui Association to send a representative team to play at Palmerston North on March 11. It was resolved that a letter he sent to the principals of the secondary schools in the association’s district asking for nominations of eight players (four boys and four girls) to participate in a tournament on March 18.
