CHEMISTS CONFER.
NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE. <*
GATHERING AT MASSEY COLLEGE.
The annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry was Held at Alassey College to-day, Mr G. A. Lawrence, of Johnsonviile, presiding over an attendance of forty delegates from all parts of the Dominion.
For his presidential address Air Lawrence chose as His subject “Rothamsted of the Nineteenth Century.” “I have chosen Rothnmsted as the subject for several reasons,” lie said. “First, because I. thought tlie subject would be appropriate in view of the conference being Hold at Massey Agricultural College; second, because _ a good many of tlie members of this institute have studied at or visited that experimental station; third, because my father is, I believe, the only surviving member of Sir Henry Gilbert’s chemical staff; and, fourth, because Harpenden happens to lie my birthplace and as a small child T was well acquainted with Rothamsted." Tlie speaker described at length the location ot the great experimental station and traced in inieresting style tlie work carried out there since as far back as 1843.
