EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” JANUARY 26. 1909. A deputation from the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce was to wait on tho Minister of Railways (Hon, J. A. Miller), when he arrived at the railway station, with a view to obtaining a reduction in freight rates on the Manawatu line and Hncieased railway facilities between this centre and Foxton. A motoring party covered tho distance from Greymoutli to Blenheim (286 miles) in one day, tho travelling time being 13 hours. The Bank of New Zealand was erecting premises in Mangaweka at- a cost of £3OOO, and the local authority was contemplating installing a water and drainage scheme costing £4oo°. 7 The death was announced of the Most Rev. Arthur Sweatman, D.D., •Anglican Archbishop of Toronto and Primate of All Canada. The last detachment of the American Army of Occupation in Cuba had left that country. The Press was requested by the Kaiser to refrain from further publishing of news of his doings; ho preferred to live as quiet a life as possible.
