LAMB COMPETITION.
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS. Per Press Association. Jan. 2f>. Cable advice was received this morning by the Now Zealand Meat Producers’ Board from its London manager that the Meat Board’s silver challenge shield for fhe North Island district lamb competition had been won by Wnirarapa, with Feilding district second, Waikato third and Manawatu fourth. Individual prizes were won as follow:
First prize (£ls). —Waikato, pen No. 316 (J. S. Thomas). ' Second prize (£10). —Feilding, pen No. 51 (J. M. Campbell). Third prize (£»). —Wairarapa, pen No. 17 (P. R. Welch). Highly commended.—Wanganui, pen No. 40 (J. Wilson).
Still another synthetic wool has made its appearance. The news has come from a special correspondent at Tokio of the invention of the process by which artificial wool—said to be as fine as Merino wool—can be made from seaweed. This threatens to revolu-
tionise the textile'industry of Japan, and is of special significance. The inventor of the seaweed wool is Mr Aida, a member of the Research Institute of Domestic Wool, which was endowed with 500,000 yen, the personal gift of Mr Atomiya, president of the Tokio
Artificial Fibre Company, Ltd.. . Acr cording to the special correspondent, the inventor makes bacteria act on seaweed in such a manner as to produce
certain chemical action, resulting in die preparation of a material from which fibre can be made.
