OVERSEER FARWELLED.

MR EGGERS'S RETIREMENT. PRESENTATIONS MADE. At the monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council yesterday the opportunity to farewell the county overseer (Mr F. H. Eggers), who has retired, was taken. The chairman (Cr. L. T. McLean), on behalf of the council, said that he and the councillors were very sorry to lose such a faithful servant as IMr iOggers h.Td been. He had served the council for 17 years and had given great satisfaction to the council and the ratepayers. "We are sorry the time has come for you to retire," continued Cr. McLean, who added that the council could not let the occasion pass without recognising in a small way Mr Eggers'h service, "Nothing lias been too much trouble to you in your work, and 1 can assure you that we all sincerely appreciate what you have done in the interests of the county." On behalf of the roadmen, Cr. McLean presented Mr Eggers with a handsome smokers outfit, stating that the gift carried with it the goodwill of the men with whom Mr Eggers. had been associated and their thanks for the reasonable manner in which he had always met them. The chairman also had pleasure in presenting Air Eggers with a cheque for a substantial amount ou behalf of the councillors, the county clerk (Mr W. L. Hesseltine) and the office staff.

Cr. J. H. Williamson said Mr Eggers had given wonderful nervine and had saved the council enormous expense by always working in its interests and by giving freely of his extensive knowledge. The speaker had known Mr Eggers personally since lie was a child, and regretted that he had been forced to retire owing to ill-health. Cr. D. Stent said that, although lie wan a new councillor, he had been a ratepayer lor many- years and was satisfied that Mr Jiggers had not burdened the ratepayers,.but had given every satisfaction, lie had !>een a fellow contractor with Mr Eggers prior to the latter's appointment as overseer, and he had always found him to be fair and just. Cr.'Stent expressed the hope that Mr Eggers would have a very pleasant trip to Nelson. Mr Hesseltine said it was .a sad day for him that Mr Eggers was leaving. Ho felt the wrench as much ns Mr Jiggers, who had always been conscientious and thorough in his work in the interests of the council. He was sorry that ill-health had been responsible for the overseer’s decision to retire, but lie hoped lie. would be spared to enjoy many years of happiness). Replying, Mr Eggers said the function had come as a great surprise to him and he felt unable to express adequately his feelings and to say how pleased he had been to hear that his services had met with the approval of councillors. He valued very much the cordial relations that had existed between himself, the council and the ratepayers. Mr Eggers expressed his thanks to the council for bearing with him in time of sickness and for the generous manner in which lie had been treated.-and for the gift he had received. Ho asked the chairman to convey to the roadmen his deepest gratitude to them for their gesture. “Ear more than the money and

gifts, I value the goodwill which has been expressed,” continued Mr Eggers, who added that the employees over whom ho had acted as supervisor were good workers. On behalf of members of his family and himself he thanked the council, Mr Kesseltine, his staff and the outside workers sincerely for the remarks made. Jlelerring to Mr Hosseltine, Mr Eggers thanked him for the co-operation and happy relations. Mr Eggers congratulated Mr J. Hallinan on his appointment as overseer. illie chairman extended a welcome to Mr Ha Ili man, who thanked the chairman and paid a tribute to the manner in which hin predecessor had carried out his work.
