CHARGE OF THEFT.
MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Appearing before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North, to-day, Francis Charles Blackey, aged 39, of Bulls, pleaded guilty to a charge of the theft on October 25, at Opiki, of a blanket, a pair of boots, gumboots, and trousers, of a. total value of £2 10s, the propertv of Leonard Harold Ralfe.
Detective E. Compton stated that prior to October accused had been a labourer at Opiki, sharing a tent with complainant. Accused entered hospital and on his return took his own and some of complainant’s property, which he had sold. He stayed at an hotel, incurring a debt of £9, and then left. Accused, who had been located but recently, was a single man without dependants. Accused said that his companion, with whom he was engaged on a contract at Opiki. had left the job while he was away, and he had to engage a Maori to do the work. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence on January 16 next.
