ART UNION FUNDS.

HELP FOR CHARITIES. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 21. The value of alluvial gold art' unions for charitable organisations was emphasised by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry), to-day. ■He said that the distribution of profits to mayors’ relief funds and to funds of philanthropic and kindred institutions gave a renewed financial vigour to many bodies whose work would otherwise be hampered or would cease.

Mr Parry said ho had received occasional letters from Citizens saying that, although they disbelieved in art unions, they had put aside their principles because a particular society doing good work among deserving people had benefited from the funds so raised, “When the audit officer gives his certificate of the profits derived from each art union,” the Minister said, “the sum of £6OOO is almost automatically distributed to the various mayors’ relief funds under instructions from the Government. The balance is banked until it grows into a sum sufficient for allocation,' generally twice yearly, to philanthropic organisations meriting assistance. While in communication with some of the Auckland institutions this week, the management showed me how, by reason of the grants made from art unions, their work could be extended.”
