SEAMAN PUNISHED.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. Two weeks’ imprisonment for deserting the steamer Rotorua at New Plymouth and a line oi ±k>o for smuggling dutiable goods, consisting ot clothing, perfumes, and leather goods, valued at £2O. were the penalties imposed by Mr C. R. Orr M alker, S.M., in the Police Court, when Hariy Campbell, alias Parke, a seaman, aged 3S, admitted both charges. The polite said the dockets in Campbell’s possession showed he had purchased goods valued at £6O before leaving England, while letters showed he had offered to sell goods at cheap * Addressing the Magistrate, Campbell said be intended to raffle the goods on the voyage. He had applied to the captain for permission to leave the ship in New Zealand, but was refused.
