(From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKARONGO,. Nov. 17. Mrs J. E. Morris presided over a good attendance at tho meeting of tho Women’s Institute and welcomed Mrs Brotherston, of Wellington. Apologies wore received from Mesdames Clark, D. Cresswoll, A. Sly and Miss M. Harrowficld. The leper station and tho Hawke’s Bay Flood Relief Committee sent letters of thanks for donations. A communication was received from Mr H. Wood, the headmaster of tho school, discussing arrangements for tho concert and tho Christmas tree which will be on separate dates before Christinas. The thought for the month was “The sweetest thing on earth is the pleasure of giving pleasure.” In tho absence of the secretary (Mrs A. Sly), the minutes wore read by Mrs R. Moyer who took the rollcall, “Tho name of a New Zealand bird.” The president asked mombers to bring jars and bottles for the cut blooms at the flower show, also cake for tho aftornoon tea. Tho stewards for tho various sections wero allotted. Mombers were indebted to Mrs Morgan for an interesting talk on salad making which dealt largely with the food values of various ingredients. It was interesting to know that such things as cabbages (raw) could bo used. Recipes wcro given for two dishes which had been prepared for exhibition. Mrs E. L. Smith obliged with a pianoforte solo. Mrs E. Uhrbom, convener of the gardening circle, announced that tho next meeting would be held at Mr Mason’s rose gardens at Fcilding. Tho report of the last arts and crafts meeting was given by Mrs Oxenham, who said that pewter work had been demonstrated and articles started by several members. At tho next meeting cake icing will he demonstrated by Miss Vautier. At the February meeting it is hoped to hold a display of work done. A competition for guessing tradesmen’s names was won by Mrs S. Oxenham. Aftornoon tea was served by Mesdames Wolfsbaucr, F. Fountain and Misses H. Wood and L. Speedy. The competition for a shouler spray was won as follows: Married. Mrs F. Fafcita 1, Mrs E. Uhrbom 2, Mrs L. Smith 3; single, Miss M. Speedy 1, Miss H. Wood 2, Miss W. Vautier 3. Bloom: Mrs H. Wood 1, Mrs E. Johanson 2, Mrs F. Eagle 3; Miss M. Speedy 1, bliss W. Vautier 2, Miss Speedy 3. Members were reminded that at the next meeting tho demonstration would be on soft toys, the competitions for Christmas novelties, and tho best bloom. Hostesses, Mesdames F. Eagle, E. L. Smith, F. Fafcita, and Miss Burr.

At tho School Committee meeting Mr E. Henaghan presided, there also being present- Messrs F. Eagle (secretary), L. Nowcombc, D. Crcsswcll, N. Lawrence, and H. Wood. No further information has been received regarding the commencement of tho scheme for milk-in-schools, although a start was to have been made this month. Tho tennis court is now being top-dressed. There lias been a good eollection of eggs for the Willard Home, and £2 has so far boon received on behalf of the Chinese children’s relief fund, for which a subscription list has boon opened. An exhibition of work was staged at the A and P. Show. ’ ' e well boring operations have ceased, water being located at 340 ft. Although the flow is nob a large one, it is sufficient for the swimming baths. , , , The last meeting of the Bible class was hold at Mr M. E. Knudscn’s residence, and the final meeting for the year will be hold at Mr R. Vautior’s house. Miss T. Nowcombc is on holiday m the north having included in her trip ’laupo, Rotorua, and Lake Waikarcmoana. bliss J Harvov is an inmato of the hospital, biisr- M.
