Their Majesties the King and Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Kent witnessed a performance at the Queen’s Theatre of “Dear Octopus,” by Dodie Smith, with Miss Marie Tempest and Mr John Gielgud in the cast, states a cablegram from London. Enthusiasm greeted the Royal party’s surprise private visit. Their Majesties, in the interval, received Miss Marie Tempest. Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., returned from Wellington to-day, having attended the Government caucus.
Sir Stanley Jackson has been elected president of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club in succession to the late Lord Hawke, states a cable message. Mr J. Wylie, president of the Auckland A. and P. Association, is visiting the Spring Show at Palmerston North, where he has been judging the light horses and ponies.
Rev. Raymond Simpson left to-day for Napier to conduct the Sunday school anniversary services, to-morrow, of the Miller Memorial Congregational Church. Rev. Norman Burgess, of Napier, chairman-elect of the Congregational Union of New Zealand, will exchange pulpits with Mr Simpson. Mr Burgess arrived to-day and is the guest of Mrs Adam Burges, Featherston Street.
It was reported last night that the condition of the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) was much the -same as when he was admitted to hospital on Thursday. He may not be able to resume his duties on Monday, as previously announced, and, if so,' there will probably be a further adjournment of the session at the Napier Supreme Court. The Gisborne quarterly session which was to have opened on Monday’ has been adjouned until November 18’ when Mr Justice Blair will take the session.
