HOME DECORATING.

Some helpful hints on interior cleaning and renovating: Faded and dirty oil paintings can be restored by rubbing with a large onion that has been cut in quarters. Rub carefully and gently over small surfaces at a time, and with a circular motion.

When mixing whitewash for ceilings add a handful of salt, and the whitewash will spread more evenly. Mildew on the less exposed parts of leather upholstery can be removed by rubbing first with vaseline and then with a soft cloth. The exposed parts will not accumulate mildew.

Marks and specks can be removed from tiles and glazed surfaces by rubbing with paraffin.

Light-coloured and neutral-tinted .wall-papers are better for small rooms than figured or dark papers, as they supply the illusion of added size. To clean ebony piano-keys rub with a warm flannel wrung out of olive oil, polishing afterwards with a chamois cloth.

Marks and discolonrations on fibrous plaster (but not grease spots) can be removed by rubbing lightly with the steel wool commonly used for cleaning aluminium saucepans.
