KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNTY. The Kiwitea, County Council met yesterday, Cr L. T. McLean, presiding. Also present were rs. W. P. Shaw, D. T. Couper, \V. G. Clapliam, A. S. D’Ath, D. Stent and A. E. Shannon. Apologies for absence were received from Crs J. H. Williamson and F. E. Tappin. The Valuation Department wrote advising payment of balance of subsidy on general rates collected in respect of the year 1937-38, amounting to £473 18s 6d. A letter was received from the PublicWorks Department, advising payment of subsidy on account of metalling the Titirangi Road amounting to £lB7 13s 7d. The Kairanga County Council forwarded a cheque for £361 2s sd, being the Kiwitea Council’s share qf the heavy traffic fees collected during the quarter ended August 31. A letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport with reference to the question of improving *tlie system of issue of motor drivers’ licenses and the issue of a learner’s plate to new drivers, and requesting the council’s views on the subject. Cr. Stent: It is not the learner who is the trouble on the road to-day—it is the “speed king.” Most of the learners are careful. The council did not approve of the suggestion of a distinguishing mark on a car, but was willing to get the testing officers to give more rigid tests to learners and will instruct them to pay particular attention to the eyesight of applicants for licenses. Cr. Couper said that drivers with defective eyesight were a menace on the road. , ~ , An appeal was made by the secretary of the Feilding Health Camp Committee to use health stamps on its mail for a month. —It was decided to purchase £5 worth of stamps. Mr J. M. Hocking, on behalf of the Anglican Church, Kiwitea, wrote applying for a load or two of metal for the church gateway and parking area. —Granted. . . Mr W. G. Templeton wrote applying for permission to erect a verandah over the footpath in front of premises at Kimbolton. —Granted. STATEMENT OF RATES. ’Hie County Clerk (Mr W. L. Hesseltine) submitted the following statement regarding rates paid and outstanding as at Oct. 19:—General, (1938-39).—Paid, £3341 5s 4d; outstanding, £4840 15s Id. Specials (193839): Paid, £1045 0s £I9BO 5s lid. Hospital, (1938-39): Paid £1720 14s 9d ; outstanding, £2642 14s Bd. Arrears (3 years).: General paid, £97 17s 9d ; outstanding. £195 5s lid. Specials: Paid, £29 4s lid; outstanding, £B7 18s 10d. Hospital: Paid, £3o 17s 6d; outstanding, £9l 13s 4d. BANK BALANCES. The treasurer stated the position in respect of the finances to be: Kiwitea County Council Fund account, dr., £lsll 5s 4d; Kimbolton Cemetery account, cr., £5 4s 8d; Land Fund account! cr., £l4B 16s; Rangiwahia Cemetery account, cr., £7 6s Bd, Waituna Cemetery account, cr., £/ ids dd. The above shows the position as at October 18. OVERSEER’S REPORT.

The overseer (Mr F. H. Eggors) reported as follows: — , „ ~ . “Main highways. —On the No. 52 Main Highway pot hole repairs have received attention and road surfaces trimmed by the grader plant. The fillings and metalling ot the approaches to the new bridge at Huahine have been completed. All willow planting has been completed on the now road construction work on this highway near Mangaweka, and further culvert extension on this section is now in progress. the shouldering and cleaning of water tables from Cheltenham to Kiwitea should bo completed at an early date, rhe No M, No 377, and No. 553 Main Highways have been kept in good order by the grader plant. Further repair work has been carried out to arrest M°6ion„ at Hayrack s bridge, Rewa, on the No. 377 Main Hig way. The usual maintenance work has received attention on all sections of main highWi “Roads other than main highways.—ln the southern portion of the county the roadmen have attended to the'usual maintenance work and quite a- number o roads have been dressed by the B ra^ c , plant. A parking area lias been constructed in front of the Anglican Church at Beaconsficld. In the northern ridings the roadmen have attended to the usual main tenance work, as well as removing slips and widening bends. In the Upper Ka whatau the roads were blocked neai the twin bridges. The work °f e l ’ ad,n S r °f‘ surfaces and cutting water tables in the Pakihikura riding has been completed and the No. 2 grader plant is now operating in the Pecp-o’-day riding. A start will be made at an early-date widening narrow and dangerous bends on the lerrace and John’s Roads in the Kimbolton riding
