MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

t _ 1 YOUTH CHARGED. “ The fortnightly sitting of the Mag- - istrate’s Court was held yesterday, Mi t R. M. Watson, S„.M., presiding. 3 A youth, 18 years of age, was charg--2 ed with stealing £2O in money, the 1 property of R. W. Woodman, on Sept te,mber 1, at Stanway. Sergeant Turner, in evidence, stated that Mr Woods man kept a sum of money in a wal- ~ let and accused had seen him go to I the wallet and take £l. Accused had 1 later gone to the wallet and removed ' £2O. Some of the money had been i. spent in the purchase of a cycle at i £l2. This cycle had been recovered and could be sold for £lO. The police . recommended that accused be placed 5 on probation, this being accused’s first r lapse. An order placing the youth on ’ probation and for the restitution of r the money stolen at the rate of £lO 1 forthwith and the balance within three months, was made. A conviction was . also entered. The Magistrate warned ; accused not to co.mmit a similar of- - fence, and pointed out to him that he ! had been treated leniently. WANDERING STOCK. ; G. J. Goldfinch, farmer, of Rongotea, was charged with allowing 47 head of cattle to graze on Rosina Line, Rongotea. The information w.gs laid by Mr W. Berry, and Mr Mc- • Innes appeared for defendant. A plea ' of guilty was entered by counsel, who explained that his client had been short of feed for his stock and had ali lowed his cattle to feed on the road, which was not a busy highway. A fine . of £l, with Court costs 10s, was imposed . T. Jones, farmer, of Tangimoana, R. Young, labourer, 'of Tangimoana, ' and E. N. Rowe, farmer, of Rongotea, were charged with allowing stock to wander. Convictions were entered in each instance, and Jones and Y’oung were each fined 10s, with costs 14s 6d, while Rowe was fined £l, with 12s 6d costs. OTHER CASES. Failure to possess a motor driver’s license cost Mrs A. Bush, of Halcombe, £l, with costs 12s.
