ENGINEERS’ CONFERENCE.
ELECTRIC POWER MATTERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Delegates from most parts of New' Zealand attended the annual conference of the Electric Supply Authority Engineers’ Association of New Zealand, which was opened by the Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), to-day. A welcome was extended to the members of the New South Wales Forestry delegation, which is headed' by Mr E. H. F. Swain (Commissioner of Forests for New South Wales). The executive committee’s annual report stated that the membership had remained steady during the year and comprised 77 members, including 3fi electric power boards, six cities, 23 boroughs, three county councils, one town board, two private companies, one Government department and two firms of consulting engineers. A proposal that linesmen should be registered was rejected after a long discussion.
Exception was taken some speakers to remits from Marlborough and Grey Power Boards advocating Government financial assistance toward the cost of reticulation in sparsely settled areas. It was contended that if this policy was followed supply authorities might be burdened with lines that would cost more for maintenance than the revenue derived. On the motion of Mr E. Hitchcock (Christchurch) it was resolved that, on economic grounds, the conference was unable to support the remits.
