NEWBURY.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEWBURY, Sept. 12. Tho Newbury School reopened on Monday after tho term holidays and on account of so much illness in the district the attendance was very low, so many of the children being ill with meales and colds; it is to bo hoped that as soon as wo got some nice fine warm weather tho attendance will improve. The farmers arc also looking for a big improvement in tho weather, as the stock and pastures both need it. Many farmers have had a lot of trouble and. sickness with their cows this spring, many suffering severe losses. At present there is a lot of sickness in the district and it is very hard indeed to get casual labour to help when tho farmer is ill. AJrs Claudo Collins is in a privato hospital in Palmerston North. Mies Peggy Rods is also in hospital. Air and Mrs S. Alorris aro much improved after their recent illness. Air Bennett, senr., of Rangitikoi Line, underwent a minor operation and is progressing favourably. Mr and Airs B. Harrowfiold, of the Lino, who have been ill, aro now qiiito recovered. Airs M. Satherlcy, of Kauwhata, is in a private hospital in Palmerston North and her friends will ho pleased to know that there is a slight improvement in her condition. Mr Parks, of Newbury Line, who was injured in a motor accident somo little time ago, is now much improved. The fortnightly euchre and dance was not so woll attended as usual on account of the very wet weather; however, a very enjoyable time was spent. The ladies’ prizes were won as follow: Airs S. Knight and Air'- J. Cribb tied for first and Airs Crook third. Mon, Mr L. Knight 1, Air AV. AVild 2, Air Pinfold 3. Tho cake donated by Mrs S. Knight was won by Airs Reilly. Air Hansen carried out tho duties of Ai.C. The hosts and hostesses wore Air M. G. Hanson and Air Schwamm and Alesdnmes S. Knight and AV. AVild.
