COUNCIL BUSINESS. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. The monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council was held yesterday, Cr. D. Collis presiding. Also present were Crs. Jos. Batchelar, W. R. Hopcroft. T. D Lynch, W. G. Shannon, J. Smith, F. J. Russell, N. P. Nielsen, and M. W. Voss. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr L. G. Pickering) reported as follows: —Taonui Riding.—Permission to proceed with the of the proposed reconstruction work on Kai-ranga-Bunnythorpe Road was received, and banking of both sides of this road has been completed. As soon as monetary authority is received from the Public Works Department a commencement will be made with the reconstruction. With assistance from the No. 13 scheme, drains on the following roads have been cleanod out: Lockwood Road, No. 1 Line, Cloverlea Road, To Wanaka Road, Gillespie’s Line and Hughes’s Line. All footpaths and channels in the Awapuni and Longburn areas have now been cleaned. Permission has come to hand for the carrying out of improvements opposite tho Tiakitahuna Hall, and a commencement has been made with the laying of pipes and filling in. Patching of roads generally has boen carried out by tho trucks. The auto patrol has been over the more important roads only as for some time it was cutting out. and constructing shoulders on the Kairanga-Bunnythorpo Road. Mangaone Riding: Screening of metal at James’s Line pit has been, continued and all boulders obtained by screening have been crushed and carted directly on to roads. To facilitate the discharge of accumulated water on James’s Line near Coulter’s, a small concrete pipe has been put across tho road. The team has been carting out metal from the Mangaone Stream at the rear of the county property. As we are now getting metal be- | low water level, scooping has had to be resorted to. Drains on the following roads have received attention : J ames’s Li,ne, Eggleton’s Road and the Taonui-Bunny-thorpe Road. Tho truck has been metalling roads requiring attention. The auto patrol has been over most of the roads cutting off corrugations and raking in loose metal from tho sides. Fitzherbert Riding: Two old earthenware pipe culverts on Pahiatua Road collapsed and have been replaced with concrete pipes. A new face oi metal has been opened up on Old West Road and tho motal obtained has proved to be of fine quality. The wholo length of Fitzherbert Hill has been re-metalled with metal from the above pit, and has already consolidated. As requested, an Bft track through tho slip on upper Tiritea Road has been cleared and the settlors concerned notified. Forest Hill Road improvements have been completed and the settlers are well pleased with the results. The road has been regraded, sight visibility around bends increased to 100 feet, watertables deepened and culverts relaid. Drains on Fitzherbert East Road have been cleaned out. As a result of an inspection of Old West Road, several road improvement works were suggested and a commencement has been made on grade easement opposite Mr Coles’s. Both trucks and graders have been maintaining road surfaces. RATE STATEMENT. The rate statement as submitted by the clerk (Mr N. I. Nielsen) was as follows, the amount paid being given first, with the outstanding amounts in parentheses:— Current year.—Taonui riding: £568 4s lOd (£Bl2l 10s 2d); Mangaone riding : £lO6 8s 7d (£5459 12s 6d); Fitzherbert riding: £217 7s lOd (£5179 5s lOd). Total, £892 Is 3d (£18760 8s 6d). Arrears.—Taonui riding: 1937-38, £IOO 6s lid (£95 3s 6d); prior to 193738, £sl 17s 7d (£93 13s). Mangaone riding: 1937-38, £136 17s 2d (£137 13e 6d); prior to 1937-38, £9O 14s 3d (£l2?j( 17s 9d). Fitzherbert riding: 1937-3?*, £55 5s Id (£B2 Is 9d); prior to 1937-?8, £56 2s 3d (£223 Is). Totals, £491 3s- 3d (£757 10s 6d). CORRESPONDENCE.

Mr O. G. B. Jewell wrote that/Ling the council for a drain recently put across the road for him.—Receiv ed The Treasury forwarded consent to the faising of a loan of £4OOO /.or tarsealing work on No. 60 main highway. —Received.

The minutes of the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee were received, advising that the pr/mnoe was being divided into seven ztf.nes, each zone to have its local coo:mittee to control local celebrations. One zone would have headquarters at Palmerston North and on the Committee the Palmerston North City Council, the Palmerston North Chary .her of Commerce, the Shannon arid Foxton Borton Borough Councils 3ad the Kairanga County Council wouVu have representation.—The chaimU.in was appointed to the committee.

The Spanish Relief Committee acknowledged the receipt of ss), which was the only puhfic subscription received through tile County Council towards the funds, for the relief of refugee children. Mr W. G. Bfe.ck wrote thanking the council for its, annual grant of £2O towards the Crippled ChiSSren’s Society.

The Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) ’wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s supjfort to the Canterbury Progress Association’s resolution iji regard to the disposal of the proce/feds of motor spihte taxation. The matler would be placed before the Governry.ent for consideration, Mr Savage stated. The /ranger (Mr I. Baldwin) reported thM 227 head of stopk had been found' wandering on counflfy roads. He pointed <yrt that there had been, no increase in /,he general rate, only the hospital rate having risen. The Public Works Department wrote

approving of the proposals, with certain conditions, for the reconstruction and sealing of the Kairanga-Bunny-thorpe main highway. Suggestions were enclosed for dealing with the Rangitikei Lino intersection on which four roads—all very busy—met. The council were advised to acquire land in the vicinity so that the intersection could be made as safe, as possible under a modern intersection scheme.—The chairman, Crs. Voss, Russell, Hopcroft and the engineer were appointed to go into the matter and report to the next meeting. The clerk reported that the rate demands of the new financial year had been sent out, the total rates being £19,652 9s 9d. The rates for the previous year had been £18,616 16s 9d. Mr E. F. Sigglekow (Bunnythorpe) wrote asking that Cleveley’s Line be formed and metalled to give access to Stoney Creek Road. —It was decided to take no action. The Manawatu Automobile Association requested that a central white line bo laid down on the ramp at Milson. — It was decided to have the work attended to.

The engineer was instructed to undertake flood protection work on the Kahuterawa Stream, near the main highway. It was decided that no monetary grant be made to the rebuilding fund of the Bunnythorpe Hall Committee, but that assistance be given in the cartage of metal. The Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum wrote asking the council to give consideration to the matter or making an annual grant to the institution. —No action was taken.
