PUBLIC SERVICE

ANNUAL MATCHES, x RUGBY AND BASKETBALL. As a result of the heavy shower of rain, which fell early yesterday afternoon, the" playing area at the Showgrounds was in a muddy condition for tho annual Public, Service Rugby and basketball matches. In the Rugby game. Public Trust beat Combined Departments by 14 points to 8, and the Agriculture Department beat Combined Departments, at basketball, by 14 goals to 11. Playing aggressively from tho outset of the Rugby match, Public Trust early established a lead, and prevented their opponents from scoring until late in the second half. The teams were as follow : Public Trust. Treweek, Lynch, Campbell, Lawson, Bobbie. McCormick, O’Keefe, Lewin, Hall, Galloway. Burrows, Cosgrove, Cozens, Lett, Regan. Combined Departments. McLean, Robinson, Hamilton, Chadwick, Kilpatrick, Taylor, Monk, Anderson, Feeney, Barrett, Powell, Davidson, Bowler, Craig, Mason. After a few preliminary skirmishes, Public Trust came away in a passing rush. O’Keefe dodged around on the blind side of tho Combined backs and passed to Campbell, who touched down. A rush, which commenced at about the half-way line, was started by O’Keefe and ended by Hall, who took the ball to dive over. Campbell converted the try. Lynch was removed from the field at this stage with an injured kneo, and was replaced by Wakefield. A movement started on the wing by Lawson resulted in Campbell scoring a try, and at half-time the score was 11 points to nil in favour of Public Trust.

After tho spell, Hall was replaced by Wallerman. The ball was kicked to the front and sent along a chain of backs to the wing, Cozens scoring. Combined Departments now took up tho running, and not only did they succeed in preventing their oppononts from scoring, but they managed to score themselves. Monk broke through tho Public Trust defence to touch down, and from a loose forward rush shortly afterwards, lie again took up the leather and scored. Taylor converted the try, the game ending 14—8 in Public Trust’s iavour. Mr R. Graham, of Shannon, was the referee.

BASKETBALL GAME. The basketball match was fast. Tho teams were as follow, those who scored having the number of goals they allot given in parentheses : Agriculture Department. —Misses J. Spilman (9), M. Heggie (3),_E. Ball (2) J. Christian. S. Reid, K. Sherlock, G. Bradley, M. Donovan, B. Fitzgerald. Combined Departments. —Misses J. Beattie, L. Wills, M. Sly, D. Lister, M Gregory, M. Wright, S. Young (4), D. Burgess (6), J. Armstrong (1). The referee was Mias N. Terry.
