VETERANS’ GOLF.

ROTORUA TOURNEY. LEVIN PLAYER’S ROUND. ROTORUA, Aug. 31. The best score of the first qualifying round of the veterans’ tournament to-day was a 74 by H. B. Lusk, Auckland. Thirty-two competitors qualify for the cup on net scores, and Lusk, on a 4 mark, was well up in the field after the first round. Half a dozen players beat tho scratch score of the course on handicap, the best performances being those of J. D. Brown (Levin) and L. S. McClurg (Napier), who were 67 net. A. Downer, of Rotorua, and formerly of Palmerston North, last year’s winner of the trophy, returned a card of 82—9—73, while D. McCormick, Auckland, last year’s’ runner-up, came home with a score of 84—8—76. S. Powdrell, Wanganui, winner of the championship in 1936 and last year’s runner-up lor the Arikikapakapa Cup, played a had. round, returning a net 80. C. Redhead, Rotorua, who last year headed the first qualifying round with a net 65, to-day did two sevens on tho homeward round, which brought his net score to 72,. while W.(O’Callaghan, of Hawera, who won the trophy in 1934, took a nine at the fourth, and a seven at the fifth to return a card of 90—6—84.

During the morning N. H. Janies (Masterton) holed his tee shot at the Crater. ,

Chief honours in the qualifying play went most appropriately to one of the real old hands, C. Kusabs, who 65 years of ago. In the early days of the Rotorua open tourney Gils player was always a force to be reckoned with and lie won it in 1921. Last year his son made a game bid to uphold the family traditions, being runner-up in the open. Now on a 13 handicap Kusabs had two excellent rounds of 80 or net 67, giving him an aggregate of 134.

On a long mark of 23 J. H. Fry showed that it was a liberal assessment by returning a net 64 to take second place in the aggregates. For the second time during the tourney a hole in one was achieved. Yesterday a Rotorua player, T. Wallace, repeated the He chose the ninth hole, the most difficult of the six one-shotters on the course. The Dieliards’ Cum for players 65 years of age or over, decided on the best net aggregate score in the two qualifying rounds, was won by Kusabs, with a score of 134.

Those who qualified included Downer (9), 73—7 G—l 43 and Brown (9), 67 — 78—145. J. T. Rogerson (Manawatu), 13, qualified for the Arikikopakapa Cup with 74—73—147.

In the matcji play yesterday, Rogerson was eleminated by V. G. Keys (Rotorua), 5 up and 4 to play; and Brown was beaten by A. J. Shepherd (Morrinsville), 3 and 1.
