GERMAN CONSUL-GENERAL.
HERR RAMM ARRIVES. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. Herr Ernst C. Ramm, who arrived to-day to take up his duties as Con-sul-General for Germany, made liis journey out alone, hut will be joined soon, he hopes, by his wife and child. He said in an interview that he had spent fifteen years in the diplomatic service, comprising several years in Japan, Russia, and Spain. When asked his opinion as to the situation in these countries, he said that, although it was only a few years since lie had been there, subsequent events had probably made his opinions out-of-date. Herr Ramm was in Tokio from 19262S, in Moscow in 1929, and in Madrid from 1929-32. For the last six years he has worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Berlin. He was esspeciallv glad to be in Berlin in 1936 to see the Olympic Games, and one of his best memories was of seeing the New Zealand long-distance champion, J. E. Lovelock, whose performance and excellence of style were much admired by the German public. ‘Herr Ramm left Germany on July 12 and went to London, where he was well received by the New Zealand High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan). Asked concerning trade relations, Herr Ramm said lie was charged to cultivate the good relations already existing and to do his best towards the promotion of an even better understanding between New Zealand and Germany. The present agreements were working out most satisfactorily, but further than that he could make no statement.
